By Bus
Public buses run all through the island. In the city of Rhodes, the main bus terminal is the ‘Nea Agora' or the New Market. Time tables and rates for buses in Rhodes are available at ticket counters.
You can also buy your ticket while on the bus, from either a cashier or the driver himself. Retain the ticket till the end of your journey. The cost of the ticket depends on the distance to the destination. For example, the cost of a trip from the city of Rhodes to Faliraki will be aournd 1.80 Euros.
Bus stops are indicated by signs on the roadside. However, do not hesitate to stop the bus elsewhere in order to board it. Time tables are not displayed on the bus stops.
A useful bus route is the one followed by bus number 21. It starts from the city of Rhodes every half an hour, passes all the big hotels on the East coast and then goes to Faliraki, which is its last stop.
By Taxi
The colour of taxis in Rhodes is dark blue with a white top. From the tourist information office, you can get a list of maximum taxi fares. For example, a trip from the city of Rhodes to Faliraki should cost 13 Euros. Similarly, a trip from the airport to the city of Rhodes should not cost more than 16 Euros. The taxi meter starts at 0.85 Euros and the minimum cost for any trip is 4 Euros. Do not allow the driver to switch off the meter.
You can hire a taxi in Rhodes. A standard surcharge of 1.50 Euros will be added if you use the phone. The cost of waiting is 7.90 Euros per hour. You will have to pay double the normal fare for hiring a taxi between midnight and 5 am. You can book a taxi in advance to avoid delays during peak traffic such as on weekends.
Fixed rates are applicable within the city limits of Rhodes. If you hire a taxi from one of the stations or by the roadside, the fare will be 5 Euros. Near the New Market (Mandraki) is the main taxi station where taxi owners try to cut down on waiting time by ensuring the taxis do not leave half full, especially for further distances. The fare is 4 Euros if you share a taxi within the city limits.
By Car
Although in theory it is possible to get your car on the island, it is not worth the trouble. You can easily rent a car in Rhodes at the airport itself or any of the hotels or at a number of local dealers. The whole island has good highways made of asphalt except for the interiors, especially in the south, where roads are nothing more than dirt tracks.
By Motorcycle
Motorcycles and mopeds are more popular options than cars. Mopeds especially are popular amongst the local youth to travel to places where cars cannot reach, like the twisted narrow roads of Rhodes city. In addition, they can be rented at very low prices as cheap as 10-15 Euros per day, which is the usual rate.
When you start your trip on a moped, make sure the tank is full as gas stations are at times difficult to find. An added stop at a gas station can save you a lot of heartache. While renting a moped in Rhodes, check that the tyre contours are in good condition and that the brakes are working properly. Beware if you happen to rent the last vehicle in the store - it could be the one which badly needs to be repaired. Though helmets are not compulsory, you may want to ask for one from the place where you rent your moped, especially if you intend to ride it on roads which have more traffic. If you are caught without a helmet while driving on the main roads, you might be fined 50 Euros.
NOTE: British Travel Insurance companies require that you wear a helmet at ALL times if you are insured, or else they will not make a payment in the event of an injury.
