Things to See & Do in Rhodes
On Rhodes, nightlife begins early on in the evening and lasts until dawn, especially during the summer months. You will find live music catering to your preferences and the choices are unlimited. Rhodes has everything, from coffee shops offering freshly brewed, aromatic coffee as well as fresh snacks and sweets to bars which have a very welcoming atmosphere and soft lighting. You will find bars playing foreign or Greek music, including everything from jazz, ethnic to rock. For the more romantic at heart, there are also bars which play softer music.

Ancient Ialyssos
Lalyssos, located in the northern part of the island, has another Acropolis which is also an important historical monument. The Dorian Temple of Athena, the Church of the Knights and the Medieval Monastery are some of the monuments which are worth a visit.
There also exist ruins from the Achaic, Byzantine and the Knight's periods.
Ancient Lindos
Lindos, located 31 miles south east of the capital, is another very old city on the island of Rhodes. Lindos is perhaps the most beautiful city on the island and is therefore often referred to as ‘the jewel of Rhodes'. In Lindos, you can see ancient temples and towers, mansions and narrow streets. The Lindos Acropolis is also as famous as the Acropolis in Athens.
Ancient Kamiros
Ancient Kamiros was one of the three liveliest cities on Rhodes, located near a hillside, 22 miles south west of the capital. The city was destroyed in an earthquake and now you can see the ruins that were found during the excavation. Most of these ruins belong to the Temple of Athena, the ancient market and the Dorian temples from the Hellenistic period.
Aquarium
The aquarium which is 80 years old is located in the New City of Rhodes. The aim of building this aquarium was to study the flora and fauna around the Dodecanese Islands. The exhibits display turtles, monk seals and rare marine life. You don't have to be an ecologist to be amused by this rare sight.
Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is located in the capital city. Here you can find objects belonging to the Hellenistic Period like vases, ceramic things, statues and sarcophaguses. You will also find the statue of the Venus of Rhodes, which was constructed in the fifth century BC and is the jewel of the museum.
Municipal Museum of Modern Greek Art
This museum located at Simi Square is in the medieval city. The museum is a non-profit municipal institution and its main aim is to study and promote Modern Greek culture to the national and international community at large. The museum has three exhibitions in the Gallery, New Gallery and the Modern Art Centre. The museum has an opulent collection of paintings, etchings and sculptures. The museum replaces the exhibitions often and also organises events to inform the general public on subjects such as art and culture.
New Town Nightlife
The casino is to be found in the famous Rhodes Hotel on G. Papanikolaou Street, bang on the beach front. The casino offers 300 slot machines and one can also play black jack, roulette, and poker. Only people above the age of 23 years are allowed into the gambling area. In the area around the casino, you can find all types of bars and restaurants. Some of them along the street cater especially to people belonging to the Scandinavian countries like Finland, Norway, and Denmark. These can be identified thanks to their sign boards in Norwegian, Finnish or Danish.
The triangle between Mandilara, Griva and Iroon Polytehneiou streets is overflowing with cafes, restaurants and pubs which stretch for around a mile and is filled with tourists who have taken packaged tours. Do not expect to find the atmosphere of a Greek Island here! To try Greek cuisine, go to the Mandraki Market where you will find some good taverns and restaurants which offer grilled food. Located behind the taxi stand in the Old Marketplace, next to the Mandraki, you will find a couple of taverns which play live Greek music. One other place which offers live Greek ‘tourist music' is the bar of the Neorion Restaurant, which is located before the main gate of the Old Town, at the entrance to the Marina towards the side of the windmills.
Aktaion, one of the earliest cafes in the city of Rhodes, is extremely popular with the local gentry and is highly recommended for good drinks, snacks, ice creams and coffee. Aktaion, which has maintained its style for decades, is managed by the Rhodes municipality and is frequented mostly by the Greeks. You can enjoy the lovely shade under the big trees, feel the breeze blowing from the Marina and see the wonderful sight of windmills and yachts in the distance. Aktaion also has a playground for children, making it an ideal place for families as well. It is undoubtedly the jewel of Mandraki. When you walk on the beach towards the seafront, you will find the Music Club Elli, which is one of the oldest music clubs in Rhodes. There are live Greek and International music programs here which are ongoing.
The Disco Babylon in the port area of Kova is one of the most popular discos in the city of Rhodes. You will find good music playing here, including great numbers from the 70s and 80s era.
Old City
The Old City of Rhodes is the largest medieval city in Europe. It is also considered to be one of the most important places of cultural heritage in the world. It is a beautiful city with buildings made in the traditional architectural style and narrow streets. You can admire the medieval castles and churches, towers, gates, bridges and medieval squares by just talking a walk around town. In addition to this, your visit must include the Castle of the Knights, the Old Clock and the Acropolis. Inside the Acropolis, you will find a number of monuments such as the Temples of Zeus, Athena and Apollo and the stadium. In the Old City, you will feel as if you are living in another era and will like it so much that you won't want to leave.
Old Town
In Socratous Street and around Evdimou Square, in the Old Town of Rhodes, you will find several fast food joints, cafeterias, Greek restaurants and taverns and shops selling ‘souvlaki' and ‘gyros'. In Ipokratous Square (Hippocrates Square), Taverna Plaka has live Greek music while in the Panorama Bar you can enjoy the music as well as the cocktails and the view from the bar located on the second floor. Located behind the fountain in Hippocrates Square is the old Venetian building, Kasteloni. The steps of the Kasteloni are the best place to sit and enjoy a can of beer and a souvlaki, which you can buy from a shop nearby. You can enjoy listening to the surrounding music and watch the passers by for free - you only have to pay for the souvlaki and beer!
Places to See When in Rhodes
Rhodes, also known as the ‘Island of the Knights', has a rich history and has developed into an important cultural centre over the years. In the past, the dominance of overseas conquerors greatly influenced the life of the people here and the culture of Rhodes. Rhodes was the centre of medieval aristocracy. Today, there are a number of remarkable historical and modern monuments which you must visit.
Seven Springs
Seven Springs is located at a distance of 19 miles south east of the capital. It is a wonderful location with a lot of trees, especially pine trees, and therefore the temperature is much lower here. There is a lake which is formed by the seven springs where you can find a number of ducks, geese and peacocks. Do not forget to visit this site and have lunch at the tavern which gives a panoramic view of the mountains.
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, standing dauntingly at the port entrance while ships passed underneath it. The Colossus was a bronze statue, 31 metres tall, which took 12 years to complete. It was completely destroyed by an earthquake, 66 years after it was constructed and was never rebuilt again.
Valley of the Butterflies
The Valley of the Butterflies is situated 15 km south west of the capital. The valley is surrounded by hills and has numerous trees and streams, making this a very beautiful place. It is for this reason that hundreds of colourful butterflies choose this place to lay their eggs. The valley is full of butterflies during the summer months of June to September, which also happens to be the peak tourist season. This fact is troublesome because tourists often disturb the butterflies. Therefore, it is better not to make a lot of noise here. This is a wonderful place for relaxing and there is a restaurant here under the shade, where you can enjoy a quiet dinner during the hot summers. Lastly, there is a shop which sells stuff that has something to do with butterflies.
